The Fine Arts Center’s collection of American Indian works includes some of the finest and most diverse artistic expressions created by Native American artists from historic times through today. A beautiful selection of approximately 50 works are featured in this exhibition, in various media including textiles, basketry, pottery, silverwork, and wood carvings.
Many of the works on display are exhibited for the first time and highlight the amazing artistry and technical ability of artists from different Southwestern cultural groups. While many of the pieces were created for functional use, the individual’s creative sensibility and artistic process are clearly manifest. Undoubtedly, the achievement of beauty was essential to daily life.
From Navajo silverwork to Hopi carvings to Pima basketry, each of these objects sheds light on the way of life of their creators and the enormous range of traditions and artistic styles of the Southwest.
