YOUTH REPERTORY THEATRE 2008

Youth Repertory Theatre, now in its ninth year, is a highly anticipated part of the theatre season here at the Fine Arts Center (FAC). Youth Repertory Theatre (YRT) 2008 is a six week intensive training program for students 14 to 18 who are interested in a career in the theatre arts. This program offers theatre classes taught by professional actors, directors, designers, and technicians and culminates with two full scale productions performed in repertory (rep). Repertory allows friends and family to see both shows sometimes within the same day. This year’s productions are the musical, Working, and Moss Hart/George S. Kaufman’s classic comedy, You Can’t Take It With You.

The program is open to both performance and technical theatre students. SPACE IS LIMITED: There is only space available for 34 performance students and 15 technical theatre students.

All performance student openings have been filled.

We are still accepting applications for our technical theatre student program.

Performance Students:

All performance students are required to audition prior to registration. All prospective students will be considered for both the musical and the play.  If a student wishes to be only considered for either the musical or the play they need to make the Program Director aware of this when they come in for their audition.  We recommend that all students audition for both shows because if a student were to exclude themselves from one or the other show they will be limiting the performance opportunities available to them.

When auditions have been completed, the Program Director will contact all those who auditioned within the following couple of weeks to inform them if they have been selected for the program. Those selected will then be provided with all of the registration materials needed to complete registration.

Technical Theatre Students:

Youth Repertory Theatre 2007 was the first year to include technical theatre students and was a tremendous success.  Due to popular demand, the number of students admitted into the program has been raised from 12 to 15.  We have also added a concentration in Stage Management in addition to our existing emphasis on students learning all of the necessary basic technical theatre duties it takes to put on a show.

These students will also have the opportunity to use these skills throughout their middle and high school years as qualified interns for upcoming Fine Arts Center Theatre Company productions.

In addition to taking class these students will assist the FAC Theatre Company’s professional designers, stage managers, and technicians with all aspects of the production side of both Working and You Can’t Take It With You.

To apply for a technical theatre student track, please fill out this form. Either send it to the Fine Arts Center, Attn: Chris Sheley, Technical Director, Performing Arts, 30 West Dale Street, Colorado Springs CO 80903 or you may drop it off at the FAC Box Office during normal business hours.

Once your application has been received you will be contacted by the program’s Technical Director who will set up an appointment time for you to come to the FAC for an interview.

After the interview process has been completed the Technical Director will contact those who have been accepted into the program.  Registration forms, etc. will be distributed after all technical theatre students have interviewed.

Registration:

Registration begins April 1, 2008 and will remain open until all available spaces have been filled.

Schedule:

An entire program calendar will be distributed to all those who are accepted and have completed, and returned all registration materials with payment.

In general, the program begins June 9, 2008 and runs through July 20, 2008

Classes, workshops, and rehearsals run from 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm Monday through Friday with a meal break from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm for the first four weeks of the program.  Students provide their own meals.

Beginning with the fifth week, rehearsals will run until 10:00 pm. There will be no classes or rehearsal July 4th.  However, there will be an added rehearsal day on Saturday, July 12th to make up for this holiday.

The sixth, and final week, will consist of dress rehearsals and performances.

The Performance Schedule is as follows:

Working July 18 7:30 p.m.
July 19 7:30 p.m.
July 20 7:30 p.m.
You Can’t Take It With You July 17 7:30 p.m.
July 19 2:00 p.m.
July 20 2:00 p.m.

ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO BE PRESENT, AND PREPARED TO BEGIN ON TIME, FOR ALL CLASSES, REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES.

ALL SCHEDULE CONFLICTS MUST BE APPROVED BY THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR PRIOR TO REGISTRATION.

All performance and technical theatre students will be required to stay after each performance of both Working and You Can’t Take It With You to help with the changing over of the set, lights, costumes, etc. This is a common practice in any repertory theatre. Students will also be required to stay after the last performance of both Working and You Can’t Take It With You to strike the set.  Again, this is a common practice in a repertory theatre.
