Christo and Jeanne-Claude will be speaking about two current works in progress, Over The River, Project for the Arkansas River, State of Colorado and The Mastaba, Project for the United Arab Emirates.

For Over The River, the artists plan to suspend horizontally a total of 5.9 miles of silvery, luminous fabric panels high above the Arkansas River along a 40 mile stretch of the river between Cañon City and Salida. Fabric panels will be suspended at eight distinct areas of the river that have been selected by the artists for their aesthetic merits and technical viability.

Scheduled for exhibition during the summer of 2012, at the earliest, Over The River is funded entirely by the artists, through the sale of Christo’s original works of art. Over The River will be created without public subsidy or taxpayer support, and the artists do not accept viewing fees or sponsorships of any kind. Christo and Jeanne-Claude are currently working to obtain the necessary permits and expect the required Environmental Impact Statement process to begin soon.

During the summer of 2011, one year prior to the project’s anticipated installation, the FAC will host the traveling exhibition Over The River, which will be comprised of approximately 175 photographs, preparatory collages, engineering drawings, actual components and materials, and maps. This exhibition chronicles the development of this ambitious project over the past 16 years by displaying the process that will be used to accomplish this artistic and engineering feat.
